Packing Notes

Aloha attire means to dress in light, breathable, summer clothes — Hawaii is very casual. Did you know that Hawai’i is closer to the equator than the mainland US and the sun is quite intense. So, if you’re prone to sunburn, we suggest looking at clothing with a sun protection rating of UPF 50. There are also rash guards that can double as sun protection as well as keeping you warm in the water.

  • Sandals/water shoes: the beach areas have lava rock which can be sharp and warm

  • Trail walking/hiking shoes: thick non-stick soles are a must (trail runners are ok but no sneakers)

  • Yoga/fitness attire

  • Swimsuit(s)

  • Large beach towel

  • Bamboo/straw beach mat (available at local drug stores in town, too)

  • Sunglasses

  • Reef-safe sunscreen 30 SPF or higher

  • Sun hat

  • Light top/swim cover for after swim

  • Light raincoat for short afternoon rain shower

  • Camera (underwater camera is fun)

  • Beach bag/backpack to carry your stuff on day trips

  • Warm layers for higher elevation activities - like the volcano

  • Mosquito repellant (some say mosquitos are Hawaii’s state bird)
